Wow – all of my wordpress posts disappeared!. Talk about a very scary experience!
(UPDATE – RESOLVED!: I was able to determine that an errant plugin was causing the repeated problems with all of my posts disapearing – deactivating and deleting this plugin stopped this problem from reoccurring)
I was doing some maintenance on How to Blog, and deactivated the Subscribe2 plugin as well as the Subscribe To Comments plugin I had been using as they are no longer necessary since Jetpack has both of those functions built into it.. I then went into Appearance | Widgets in my dashboard and dragged the ‘Blog Subscriptions (Jetpack)’ widget to the top of my sidebar and configured it. Then I dragged the “Top Posts and Pages (Jetpack)’ widget to the bottom of my sidebar and configured it.
I then went to view my blog, and while the sidebar changes had been activated, my blog was now showing ZERO POSTS!
Going back into admin showed 0 posts. I tried undoing the steps I’d done, but still said 0 posts. As I have hundreds of posts going back to 2004 on How to Blog, I was flipping out.
I can’t understand how all of my posts could have just disappeared like that!!!
Fortunately, as I had just backed up my database using WP-DBManager as I just upgraded wordpress to 3.5.2, I was able to restore the database and thus all of my previous posts…
But it is an absolute mystery to me as to why all of my Wordpress Posts Disappeared in the first place… And it is extremely disconcerting.
Has anyone else had a similar experience recently???
As an aside…
This just goes to show the massive importance of regular backing up of your WordPress blogs! You can easily automate this using one of several plugin options. I used to use WordPress Database Backup in combination with WP-Optimize (which optimizes your database for you), but after installing P3 (Plugin Performance Profiler), I’d discovered that WordPress Database Backup used an excessive amount of resources and was affecting load times of my pages. I now use WP-DBManger instead and highly recommend it. Not only does it use significantly less resources, but this single plugin handles backing up your database (and can automate it), restoring of your database if necessary, and automated optimizing and repairing of your database.
UPDATE – EVERY WORDPRESS POST DISAPPEARED AGAIN!
Yesterday I was having some issues with the Broken Link Checker plugin, so I decided to deactivate it, delete it, and then reinstall it and activate it again. After doing so, I clicked to view my blog and once again there were NO POSTS! None. Once again all of my wordpress Posts Disappeared. This is the only WP blog I am having this problem with (so far…thankfully), but it is obviously a pretty big problem! I once again restored from backup, but I’m not gonna lie – I’m a little freaked out about it. I’ve got some investigating to do!!
OMG, All my posts disappeared AGAIN!
This time when I tried to restore from backup using WP-DBManager I repeatedly got error messages of the restore failing. Yikes!
So, I went to cPanel on my host (Hostgator) and launched PHPMyAdmin. Turned out I had to repair my blog_posts table. After doing that, the posts returned. So somehow my database keeps getting corrupted. Just fantastic (not!)
I will continue to monitor the situation and try to determine why this keeps happening. ANSWER: Hostgator tech support figured out that a plugin was behaving badly and causing this recurring disaster to keep happening. I have since deleted it and all is well. Phew!
