The Risk of Cancer From E-cigarettes is 57,000-fold Lower Than Smoking

New Study On E-Cigarettes Shows Risk of Cancer is Negligible

Vapers are 57,000 times less likely to get Cancer than smokers and a new study proves it.

A recent piece of research showed the risks of developing cancer was lessened by 100 times for vapers compared to smokers – however an expansion of those findings has come up with this staggering statistic.

The original report: Comparing the cancer potencies of emissions from vapourised nicotine products including e-cigarettes with those of tobacco smoke – was published on the Tobacco Control website and was carried out by Dr William E Stephens from the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

He found the risk from vaping was up to 100 times less than normal tobacco smoke with heat not burn products giving a slightly higher risk than vaping.

He also identified the risk of developing cancer grew slightly for those using significantly high powered devices.

The research concluded:

Optimal combinations of device settings, liquid formulation and vaping behaviour normally result in e-cigarette emissions with much less carcinogenic potency than tobacco smoke, notwithstanding there are circumstances in which the cancer risks of e-cigarette emissions can escalate, sometimes substantially. These circumstances are usually avoidable when the causes are known.

However pro vaping researcher Dr Konstantinos Farsalinos M.D has pointed to a new Italian study that takes Dr Stephenson’s research step further.

This particular study grandly titled: Measurements of electronic cigarette-generated particles for the evaluation of lung cancer risk of active and passive users – has recently been published in the Journal of Aerosol Science and features on the Science Direct website.

Incidentally the results of the full study are behind a paywall and hence I’m guessing the reason this hasn’t been picked up by the media – which in all honestly is a travesty given the enormity of the findings!

Flawed Science

However Dr Farsalinos M.D gets to the nitty gritty on his website suggesting the way the Scottish research was carried out used a “flawed” argument:

Shortly after a study in Tobacco Control identified a very low cancer risk from e-cigarettes compared to tobacco cigarettes, a new study by Italian researchers tried to calculate the risk from e-cigarette exposure and compared with smoking.

The authors used measurements of particle size and mass distribution; however, and unlike the scientifically flawed argument that only particle number and size matters, they calculated the risk using the composition of the aerosol and particles using literature data. E-cigarettes were found to expose to about 100-times higher particulate matter-10 μg (PM10) compared to smoking.

He said the original findings had been almost been gleefully picked up by the anti vape brigade describing them as:

The fanatic supporters of the particulate matter theory (which is a total misinterpretation of science and should be considered gossip rather than serious scientific debate) would support that e-cigarettes will increase the cancer risk by 100-fold compared to smoking.

Not so he says pointing to the Italian research that clearly states:

…the careful assessment of the aerosol composition of e-cigarettes showed that the cancer risk for vapers is about 5 orders of magnitude lower compared to smoking. To be exact, they identified a 57,000-fold (thousand) lower Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk (ELCR) from vaping compared to smoking.

The Italian researchers: Mauro Scungio (PhD) – Luca Stabile (PHD) and Professor Giorgio Buonanno say their findings show:

…the ELCR evaluated for the mainstream aerosol of ECs results lower to the target limit reported by EPA and WHO. WHO, in fact, reports an ELCR of 1×10-5 as target value (Commission on Environmental Health, 1996), while EPA considers a target risk range of 10-6 to 10-4 to be ‘‘safe and protective of public health” but ‘‘even risks slightly greater than 1×10-4 may be considered adequately protective” under specific conditions (EPA, 1991b).

Media Blackout

Dr Farsalinos said he had no doubt this crucial research findings would be literally swept under the carpet:

I am certain this study will generate ZERO publicity. This is very common for studies showing anything positive on e-cigarettes. After so many studies published in the past few years, smokers still believe that e-cigarettes as similarly or more harmful than smoking. Sad for public health…

Sad indeed however it’s yet another detailed scientific study that shows vaping and e-cigarettes whilst not risk free are a considerably safer alternative to smoking.
