Why you need to run and record your first Blab session

Every week it seems a new social media platform is born. As content creators, we are already overwhelmed with all of the social media platforms that we think we “should” be on. Do we need one more social media platform?

That’s exactly what I thought when I first heard of Blab. If you are not familiar with Blab, it is a live social video platform; similar in many ways to Periscope.

With Blab, you can go live on your smartphone or computer and talk with followers around the world. Besides the live chat, Blab allows up to four video broadcasts to happen at once. As the moderator, you can decide only to show one, two, three or four video feeds at once.

What makes Blab unique or different?

So, why am I so excited about Blab? What makes it that unique or different from other social media platforms?

1. The Power of Amplification

I’m always looking for ways to work smarter. As a content creator, you should be as well. In the past, I’ve tried different elaborate setups to try and pull off a way to record a video while doing a podcast. Nothing worked as smoothly as I had hoped.

But that is different with Blab. As the moderator in a Blab session, I can decide when to start a recording and when to stop the recording. I didn’t have this option with Periscope, which begins recording the moment you go live.

Blab allows me to have a “before” show and “after” show section to my broadcast. I’ll talk more about this in the next point.

Here’s how I amplify my content to spread one message in four unique ways.

• Blog Post – I process a topic through writing. Through writing, I can easily organize my thoughts first before I record them for a video or podcast.
• Video – now that I have my topic in writing, I have a script to follow for the video I record on Blab. I don’t “read” the script word for word, but I use it as a guide for my discussion
• Podcast – after your Blab session, Blab will email you both a video and audio link of your recording. From there, you can upload your audio to go live on iTunes for your podcast.
• Live Community – your message can also benefit from having a live audience in place on Blab as you record your video and audio show. I believe this improves your show because you are more likely to bring passion and energy to your show.

2. The Power of Community

The more Blab sessions you produce, the more of a community you can build. People can choose to follow you on Blab, and this will notify them by email when you go live. You can also push a notification to any followers on Twitter to let them know you are live as well.

I also love that I can get instant feedback in the chat while I’m discussing a topic. I learn just as much about a topic from the discussion of others. You also have the option to allow listeners to call in, show up on video and ask a question. This allows for a new level of intimacy with your followers.

During the Amplify Virtual Summit, I invited three presenters to join me for a Live Q&A. When they shared the Blab session on their social media channels, it brought more attention to my Blab Show which gave the opportunity for new people to subscribe to my Blab channel.

3. The Power of Business

If I had to boil my business down to two key factors, it would be this: growing my email list and increasing my revenue. I can do both with Blab. Let’s take a closer look at both.

• Growing your email list – I use LeadPages to promote a new PDF, checklist or guide for each show. I do so by using the text option called LeadDigits. For an example, text the word BLABBER to 44222. Since my show will be a podcast as well as a video show, I want to make it as easy as possible for my listeners to join my email list.
• Growing your revenue – While on your Blab show, mention your sources of income when appropriate. I’ve mentioned my latest book on air and had listeners tell me in the chat they bought it. I’ve mentioned my mentoring program and received emails after the show about signing up. The revenue opportunities are endless.

4. The Power of Flexibility

Blab gives you the flexibility to use the tool however you want. Whatever kind of show you have in mind, you can probably pull it off with Blab. Here’s a few examples:

• Solo show – You can do a solo show each week with a live audience. Record a video and podcast episode at the same time while having a live audience. This is the current format I’m using.
• Interview show – If you already have an interview-based podcast, then why not start doing it on Blab? This allows you to have a live audience to help you create more of a buzz.
• Social chat show – You don’t have to have a structured format to benefit with Blab. Invite a few of your friends to join you and have a live discussion on the fly.
• Live call in show – As long as there is one open spot, you can allow listeners to appear live on video to join the discussion or ask questions.

At the time of this writing, Blab is not without its bugs. However, I see the platform improving each week, and the customer support is fast and helpful. I see Blab as the tool I’ve been waiting for to help me amplify my message. Give it a try!
