Deck the halls safely this Christmas

Christmas this year maybe a little different but that doesn’t stop us making Christmas special in our homes. Many people are going to extra effort to make up for the year we have had. You may be decorating your home whilst trying to juggle many things and feeling the pressure, so take care and use our Christmas decorations safety guide below.

Creating that Christmas magic

There are many tips for ensuring your Christmas decorations are safely put up and placed which includes:

  • Ensure you use the correct Christmas lights for outdoor use so that they are safe and test them before you hang them.
  • Take care on ladders when hanging decorations and where possible get someone to hold the ladder for you.
  • Turn Christmas lights off before going to bed.
  • Ensure that you don’t overload extension leads and use the correct adaptor plug where applicable and don’t use ones from something else as they may not be compatible.
  • Secure any cables and ensure there are none hanging or laying on the floor that can cause a trip hazard and use hooks and insulated staples if fixing electrical wires to surfaces.
  • A Christmas tree makes a great centrepiece, however, if you have young children or own a cat make sure that it is well anchored down so that it won’t fall over if pulled, jumped on or climbed by your furry friends.
  • If you have a real tree place it away from any heat sources as it can dry it out and is flammable.
  • If you put chocolates or candy canes on your Christmas tree be careful where you put them so that they are out of reach of your pets, as chocolate is poisonous to some animals like dogs. It can also encourage children to climb or reach for them, so as above ensure your tree is anchored down or don’t use sweets on your tree.
  • It is not widely known that poinsettias are poisonous if digested so place them out of reach of pets and children.
  • Candles can make a room feel magical and atmospheric but ensure that you keep them away from flammable things like the Christmas trees or curtains, and that they are positioned away from areas that people can brush past. Also, ensure that you blow them out when not staying in the room with them.

Many of these tips may seem like common sense but unfortunately, accidents often happen when we decorate our homes as we can get distracted or forget that we have these additional things in our home.

However you decorate your home and whatever you do this Christmas period, we hope you have a safe and wonderful time!
