Shiro Restaurant | Thirty-Three Years and We’re Still Here

When our founder, Hideo Yamashiro opened his eponymous establishment in 1986 he set the tone that continues to this day. It’s all about the ingredients. We seek out only the finest available (as Shiro before him, our chef de cuisine starts each day with a trip to the downtown Los Angeles fish market).

We serve them with accompaniments and sauces that show off those ingredients rather than overwhelm. In fact, when Zagat was a locally edited publication with input from diners, they wrote: “If God cooked fish, this is how it would taste.” While pristine seafood was our start, over the years we have added new dishes, such as ribeye and filet mignon steaks with the best USDA prime beef we can find. Innovative appetizers include salmon tartare tacos with Cucumber, Avocado and Mustard Aioli.

Enjoy In-house desserts like the extremely popular apple tart (made with puff pastry) with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. And then there is our oft copied whole deep-fried 2-3 pound catfish in ponzu sauce, covered with cilantro, with crispy slices of ginger tucked away throughout. Tens of thousands of this signature dish have been served.

Though the ethos of Japan is present, SHIRO is a French restaurant with west coast influences. The menu changes nightly based on what the freshest ingredients obtainable are that day. One night you might revel in a typical French bistro style favorite of fried Japanese Kibinago (Anchovies) with a garlic aioli and our special touch of truffle salt while the next night there might be an amazing Prosciutto Salad with Belgian Endive, Arugula & Parmesan Cheese. Or perhaps Truffle Ravioli with Mushroom Duxelle with fresh sliced Black Truffle.

You can find our menu Wednesday thru Sunday after 3pm. posted to our website, restaurantshiro.com.

Food must be the start, but it is not all that is SHIRO. Our wait staff strives to be attentive without being intrusive. We have been recognized many times for best service in Los Angeles. Some of our patrons have been Dining with us since our opening and they know that besides a wonderful dinner that awaits, SHIRO is the destination for business meetings and family celebrations.

A pandemic is a supreme challenge. We quickly began curbsiding and free local delivery (carried out by our own staff). Diners have commented how carefully our take-out has been prepared, saying that if they close their eyes they might be eating in our dining room. Now, though it presents it’s own challenges, we are also open for outdoors dining. It is, thanks to the City of South Pasadena, on the sidewalk and blocked off street, thus we are here to serve and provide, perhaps, one friendly and delectable refuge from the world as it is.

So, yes, after thirty three years, we are still here. SHIRO. Fine dining without pretense. We hope you’ll join us.

● As of Wednesday November 25th, we had to suspend outdoor dining for three weeks due to the LA county mandate.
