Photography exhibitions to visit in February 2017

Keep your creative juices flowing this February by visiting some inspirational art and photography exhibitions. Pencil in one of this selection of exhibitions across the country for some ‘me time’, a romantic visit to somewhere interesting, or a chance to educate the little ones on the variety of artwork out there. Let us know if you pay a visit to any of the following and of course, if they inspire your next photo on canvas.

Richard Mosse: Incoming

Where: Barbican Centre, London

When: Until 23 April

Richard Mosse’s exhibition ‘Incoming’ brings together beautiful images using battlefield technology, giving a different view on the European refugee crisis.

In his last installation, ‘Enclave’, Mosse covered the war on Congo using film stock to render greens as reds, giving the jungle an unfamiliar pink hue. This time, the images are black and white, taken with a heat camera to document the experiences of refugees.

The title piece is a three-screen video promotion accompanied by a soundtrack of field recording and electric drones. The images are full of contrast, flicking between the positive and the negative.

Fashion on the Ration: 1940s Street Style

Where: Imperial War Museum, Manchester

When: Until 1 May

This exhibition celebrates the craziness and ingenuity of ‘Fashion on the Ration’. In focus are at the ways fashion survived and thrived under the restrictions of this time in history.

Featuring jewellery created from aeroplane parts to ‘onesies’ to wear in the air raid shelters, the exhibition of wartime images spans military uniforms functional fashions.

Get a glimpse into what life was like in 1940s Britain – with shortages of “everything  from knicker elastic to buttons” says Maev Kennedy from The Guardian.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year

Where: M Shed (part of Bristol Museums), Bristol

When: Until 5 March

M Shed in Bristol is home to 100 stunning images from the renowned wildlife Photography competition created by the Natural History Museum. Strong on “visual drama and narrative”, prepare to see lizard-chasing parakeets and balletic whales among the mix!
