How To Setup A Facebook Page For Your Business In 5 Steps

There are over 1.65 billion monthly active visitors on Facebook. There’s a high chance that millions of your target customers on there too. By bringing your business to Facebook it’s an efficient way to reach them quickly and create engagement. So we’ve created a step by step guide on how to setup a Facebook page for your business in 5 steps.

Note: Before you begin setting up you Business Facebook page, you’ll need to ensure you have a personal account setup first. Facebook doesn’t allow you to setup a page, without linking it to your personal account. 

Step 1: Provide the basic information about your business

Launch your favourite browser and open this URL: https://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php

Once the URL loads, you’ll see six categories:

  1. Local Business or Place
  2. Company, Organization or Institution
  3. Brand or Product
  4. Artist, Band or Public Figure
  5. Entertainment
  6. Cause or Community

Pick a category that best fits your business.

If you change your mind later, you can change to another category.

After you’ve selected your category, the next screen will ask you to provide a one- or two-sentence description of your page, the URL to your website, a Facebook page URL, and a profile picture. If you opt for the local business category, you’ll be able to choose category tags to further define what your business is about.

About your page: Here, you get to describe what your page is about in just 155 characters. It helps to be as descriptive as possible because this text will appear near the top of your page, both on mobile and desktop.

URL: Here, provide the website address of your business.

Facebook URL: Here, you may be able to choose a personalized URL for your page. For instance, if the name of your business is XYZ Ltd., you may be able to choose a URL like this–facebook.com/xyz. It’s worth noting that Facebook may ask you to get at least 25 fans before you can unlock this custom URL feature depending on the type of business you have chosen in the categories.

Profile photo: Here, you upload a profile Photo for your page. This photo will be your icon every time you post an update or comment on a post.

Make sure you upload a clear photo. Profile photos should be at the very least 160 by 160 pixels. Photos with square dimensions are better, but if your picture is horizontal, Facebook will do its best to make it square by cropping it.

Preferred page audience: Take advantage of this if you want to restrict your page to a particular audience.

Step 2: Create a catchy cover image for your page

If you have completed step 1, your page is already available to public viewing. Let’s make it look snazzier by adding a nice cover photo.

The cover photo shows up across the top of your page. This gives you an awesome opportunity to deliver a visual element that is catchy, supports your branding, or stirs up emotions within your visitors.

At this stage, you might be thinking to yourself “What’s the ideal size of a Facebook cover photo?” (don’t worry, we’ve got this covered further on down.)

Depending on how professional you want your page to look, you can design the cover photo yourself, or hire a designer to do it on sites like Fiverr.

However, if you know your way around Photoshop, there are lots of Facebook cover photo templates you can find by searching Google. If you have no design DNA in you, Canva can help you out; it has several ready-made templates that look great without modification. You should also check out Pixlr if you don’t have Photoshop as it’s a free online service that runs like a lite version of Photoshop.

Cover Image: The header image dimensions are recommended to be 828×315 pixels.

However, bare in mind that the mobile version of Facebook will take in the first 563 pixels of width from the centre, so your mobile image will look like below (as shown on an iPhone 6S) with the edges cut off.

After you’ve created your cover image, click on the “Add a Cover” button to upload it.

Step 3: Fill in your profile information

Once you’re done with steps 2 and 3, you can provide more details about your business by adding more information to the Page Info section. You can access this section by hovering on the More button below your cover image and then clicking on Edit Page Info.

Facebook will have already filled in your name and category. Next, you might add these bits of information:

Start Info: Here, you can set when your product or company was founded or launched. Your fans will see this info on your timeline at the very bottom.

Address: Fill in this if you want people to able to check in with Facebook anytime they are close to your location.

Long description & Mission: Here, provide your mission statement and any other information that further explains your brand. This gives you an opportunity to go beyond the measly 155 characters of description you previously provided.

Once you’ve fill out all this information, they will show up on the About tab of your page.

Step 4: Add collaborators

If you want an internal team to handle your marketing duties, you’ll want to grant them access to your page and assign them various roles. If an agency is handling this for you, they will have a different process that they will talk you though.

Here is a list of available roles:

  • Admin– has complete access to everything. No restrictions. By default, you are the admin.
  • Editor– can send messages, create Facebook ads, edit the page, see which admin posted or commented, and view insights.
  • Moderator– can reply and delete comments, send messages, see which admin posted or commented, and view insights.
  • Advertiser– can create ads, see which admin posted or commented, and view insights.
  • Analyst– can see which admin posted or commented, and view insights.

To choose your collaborators, go to the “Page Roles” section in your page settings. There, you can type the name of anyone who has liked your page or any of your Facebook friends. Alternatively, you can type in an email address that’s associated with a Facebook account.

Step 5: Publish your first post

Add content to your page by publishing a status update, a photo, a video, a link, a milestone, or an event. Posting fresh updates makes your page more enticing once people begin to visit.

You can even add to the thrill by posting visual content. Facebook tends to rank visual imagery and Live Videos higher than other forms of content in news feed, so bare this in mind when you’re planning your strategy.
