When Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in September 2017, things were a mess. Identified by the United States National Hurricane Center as the deadliest Atlantic hurricane to strike the Caribbean in almost 20 years, Maria resulted in nearly 3,000 deaths and $100 billion in damage, obliterated the nation’s power grid and communications network, destroyed or damaged more than 65,000 homes, and left 10,000 people homeless—half of whom still were as of 2020.
