How to Increase Fuel Efficiency: Buying Better for You & the Planet

You’ve just finished up your spin class at the gym and are hitting up the farmers market before heading over to meet your friends in the park for an afternoon picnic. As you run around, that dreaded warning light turns on—it’s time to refuel.

Nothing interrupts a jam-packed day more than having to make a pesky stop at the gas station. Not to mention, as we all are aware, traditional fuel is not Earth-friendly by any means. That’s why fuel-saving technology has been all the rage lately, but it can be hard to understand what all the terms mean.

If you’re wondering how to increase Fuel Efficiency, then allow us to break it down for you.

Shift Into Cleaner Drives

Unless you’re a car expert, you probably don’t put too much thought into the transmission system of your vehicle when shopping for a new one. Most of the time, we opt for a car that feels good when we drive it, without really diving into the specific features.

However, different transmissions can actually play a large role in your car’s fuel consumption. For example, a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) has an infinite number of gears, which means it seamlessly shifts as you drive. Not only does this provide a smooth experience behind the wheel, but the sleek acceleration requires less fuel consumption.

Choose an Engine Crafted for the Environment

It should come as no surprise that the powertrain under the hood of a vehicle is the biggest player in fuel usage. There are various technologies you can look for in an engine, such as the following…

  • Cylinder deactivation: Often known as Stop-Start technology, this feature turns off the cylinders when not needed or in use, such as when idling in rush-hour traffic.
  • Turbochargers: These increase engine power, so that a smaller motor is needed, which in turn lowers fuel consumption.
  • Gasoline Direct Injection: By directly depositing fuel into the combustion chamber, there’s less distance for the fuel to travel and the engine is able to use less gas overall.

Of course, as I’m sure you’ve noticed, the biggest change in the automotive industry is the move to alternative fuel options.

Hybrid: Blending Efficiency and Activism

Hybrids burst onto the market a few years ago and have refused to slow down. They have only become cleaner, more efficient, and more advanced—all to help you stay away from the pump and protect the planet at the same time.

Major brands, like Hyundai, now offer hybrid models, such as the IONIQ. Available as a traditional hybrid and a plug-in option, this sedan is designed to cut down dramatically on your fuel consumption. In fact, the hybrid model earns an EPA-estimated 60 MPG on the highway, which allows you to travel up to 714 miles on a single tank of fuel.

Electrify Your Drive

Expanding upon the clean efficiency of the hybrid models, you’ve probably seen more and more electric vehicles take to the streets. These engines don’t use traditional fuel at all, which creates the most environmentally friendly commute available on the road today.

Let’s take a look at the Hyundai IONIQ again. This hatchback is also available in an all-electric version, which journeys a maximum of 170 miles on a full charge. Imagine trips into the city for a romantic dinner or a week of heading to work without using any gas at all. What a dream!

Save Gas, Save Time, Save the Earth

Have we fueled your decision on your next ride? Now that you have a better understanding of the role these fuel-efficient technologies play in helping the environment, you’re ready to take a road trip with your friends or head across town for a sale at the thrift store without having to stop to refuel.

With cleaner energy powering your drives, where will you roam?
