Yard waste always seems to be abundant. In the spring and summer, you have grass clippings from mowing your lawn. In the fall, the leaves start to drop and need to be raked up and disposed of. And winter storms can often knock down trees and break off branches. Here are a few ways you can easily manage it all:

Compost– The greenest and most environmentally friendly option is to compost. You can simply start a pile in a corner of your yard that doesn’t get used much and add to it as you go along, or you can build or purchase a composting bin that helps speed up the decomposition process. Throw in your grass clipping, leaves, weeds, and household waste such as coffee grounds and egg shells, turn it over regularly, and eventually you will have valuable soil that can be used for gardening or landscaping.

Chip– Another environmentally friendly option (aside from being powered by a gasoline engine) is to rent a wood chipper for downed trees and limbs. The chipped material can be used as mulch in your landscaping or as a natural material for adding walkways on your property.

Connect– Most municipalities will Collect Yard Waste if it is properly bagged or cut to size. Check your city, town, or county’s website to see what the rules and regulations are and when the materials can be picked up curbside. Many municipalities that collect yard waste separately from your standard trash pickup will use the materials for their own composting or mulching purposes. Some even offer them for sale if you’re in need of inexpensive mulch or gardening soil.

Contact– If you have no other alternative or you do not have the tools necessary to cut wood down to a size that is collectible by your city, contact a junk hauling company. They also often use the materials they collect to create compost dirt or mulch, too.
