Hemp building symposium set for Montreal

The International Hemp Building Association (IHBA) moves its annual Symposium to Montreal this October, said Steve Allin, the Association’s Director. This marks the first time the event, now in its 7th year, is being held outside Europe.

The Symposium, scheduled for Oct. 17-18, 2017, is widely recognized as the world’s leading forum on hemp construction, offering presentations on technological innovations, research and test results on component materials, and giving a snapshot of ground-breaking projects around the world. Allin moderates the discussion, for which 12 international speakers are already scheduled.

Host organizer for the Montreal Ihba Symposium is Shefford, Québec-based ArtCan, a turnkey hemp building firm that also develops ecological building materials made from hemp cellulose and other plant fibers that work well in masonry.

Media partner HempToday will produce a special print edition focused on hemp building for the Montreal IHBA Symposium.

Allin founded the International Hemp Building Association (IHBA), which he serves as director, in 2009. The organization has more than 200 members from 25 different countries. An author, teacher and consultant, Allin has worked on hemp building projects all over the world for the past two decades. He is currently involved in projects to rebuild with hemp in the post-earthquake areas of Haiti and Nepal.

In addition to lectures, IHBA Symposium attendees will take a field trip to a nearby church and stone buildings which have been renovated with hempcrete and hemp plaster.
