The Hypocrisy File – Margaret Trudeau

Liberals have loudly and virtuously complained about how mean and nasty the Conservative Party campaigns. They often make vague references to Conservative Ads that personally “attack” other politicians. I’ll admit that there have been – and there will continue to be – Conservative ads that highlight their opponents real or perceived weaknesses. And I will also defend this approach.

The attacks on Michael Ignatieff leading up to the 2011 Federal election were not “personal” attacks, they were based on the fact that Ignatieff had spent most of his adult life outside of Canada, and that he “Didn’t come home for you.” And where is he now?

The current crop of attack ads against Justin Trudeau do not attack him personally, they merely remind Canadians that he has very little experience, and they try to do this in an engaging and sometimes humorous way. These attacks are seen as “mean” and “nasty” by the Liberals – the same Liberals who brought you the “hidden agenda” and “guns in our streets” ads.

All of this is fair game in politics, and as we’ve seen, it’s applied by virtually all parties.

But it’s the Liberals that whine the loudest, and complain about Negative Attacks out of one side of their mouth while hurling personal negative attacks at the Conservatives out the other side.  I cited one recent example of this here, back in October.

Yesterday on CBC’s Ottawa Morning Margaret Trudeau, mother of the Liberal leader, joined the chorus of whines:

“All that attacking, all that meanness, all the partisanship… I have a bigger, peaceful view of life than aggressively breaking down other people. I try to build up people, not break them down, and in politics, it seems now the game is breaking down your opponents,” she told host Robyn Bresnahan.

This is the very same Margaret Trudeau, who in 2013 said what can only be seen as a very personal attack on Stephen Harper’s appearance:

“If Stephen Harper took off his shirt in public, I’m not sure he’d raise any money for charity”
