Progressive Changes In The Laws Related To Rape And Sexual Assault

Legislature has introduced some progressive changes in the laws related to Rape and Sexual Assault after Hudood Ordinance was modified in 2006 and some subsequent legislations, including. The Punjab Protection of Women against Violence 2016. For example, rape is now separated from adultery and is no longer part of Hudood Ordinance. Impeding investigation is a crime. The public servants can face three-year imprisonment for it. These cases are to be decided in three months or will be sent to the high court chief justice concerned, appeals are to be decided in six months and the cases wrapped up in a year. Identity of victims cannot be revealed and the trial will be held in-camera. FIR has to be registered in the presence of a female officer or family member. DNA of rape victim can only collected with consent. And sexual history cannot be brought up in the trial. But despite all these changes, there is no end to violence against women in the country. Pakistan was ranked world’s sixth most dangerous country in 2018 in a survey by Thomson Reuters Foundation. It is because the executive isn’t ready to implement even the existing laws
