New ‘Manufacturing Communities Act’ Would Spur Broad Manufacturing Renewal

The bipartisan Made in America Manufacturing Communities Act advances a regionally driven approach to strengthening America’s manufacturing economy, writes Stephen Ezell in Innovation Files. This community-level approach has already proven effective, as demonstrated by the administration's success with the Investing in Manufacturing Community Partnerships (IMCP) program, which has already identified 24 “Manufacturing Communities” throughout the United States.

The new legislation, spearheaded by Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Mark Kirk (R-IL), and Jim Moran (R-KS), would make this a permanent program and designate local regions as “Manufacturing Communities,” putting them at the front of the line to receive federal economic development funding for the purpose of investing in regional manufacturing.
