PARCC Math Problems

PARCC means Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers.  What it means to schools is different: there will be yet another testing instrument and evaluation tool for students and schools to be measured and analyzed.  Math teachers are scratching their heads over it, trying to understand how to prepare kids for it.

After sitting through several speakers who have addressed PARCC as it concerns mathematics education, there are two main areas to address: 1) higher order thinking skills (HOTS) and 2) use of technology.

I have created both instructional videos and interactive quizzes on MATHguide.com to address a variety of PARCC-like problems.  As an added bonus, students who frequent the website will also become familiar with the interactive nature of its dynamic web pages, which is exactly the same environment they will face when taking the PARCC exam.

Here are some PARCC problems below that I have addressed on MATHguide.com.

Flight of a Projectile
This problem involves setting up a function, graphing the function, and understanding critical points on a graph to answer problems related to the flight of a projectile.

Solving for 'P' Problem
Here is an example of a problem that requires students to know some algebra and how to solve equations [1].

Picture Frame Problem
This problem involves creating algebraic expressions to model several lengths and widths related to a picture and its frame.

Open Box Problem
This problem requires students to write expressions for the length, width, and height of a box.  Then, they have to develop a function to describe its volume, graph the volume function, and locate the maximum volume within the acceptable domain values.
