Days after being appointed as BJP in-charge of Haryana elections, Kailash Vijayvargiya, 58, is confident about the performance of Party in the state assembly polls due in October. A cabinet minister of BJP government in Madhya Pradesh, Vijayvargiya joined the party in 1983 after working for Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). In an interview with TOI, Vijayvargiya tells Sukhbir Siwach about his party’s strategy for the upcoming assembly polls:
Q: Do you think the break-up of alliance with Haryana Janhit Congress would lead to losses to BJP?
A: No, not at all. Moreover, people who were not happy with us because of them (HJC), are now joining us.
Q: Many Congress leaders are joining BJP. Don’t you think that it is over-dependence on leaders of other parties?
A: No. See, the BJP did not have a strong structure in Haryana earlier. But now, we have certainly emerged as a strong party. In these circumstances, it’s natural that leaders from other parties are getting attracted towards BJP. More people are coming to BJP, confident that it would form the government. But we would ensure that more and more committed people get party tickets for Vidhan Sabha Polls.
Q: Jats have been traditionally supporting the INLD or Congress. Do you think that this section would shift towards BJP this time?
A: Yes, this time, it will happen. Even during Lok Sabha Polls, a large number of them voted for our party. This time, people would give us votes, rising above caste equations because they want BJP to form the government.
Q: Would you project chief ministerial candidate for Vidhan Sabha polls?
A: As of now, we are not in a hurry.
Q: There are talks about external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj’s possible candidature for CM post?
A: We have not yet thought over it (projection of CM candidate). First, we would garner majority, then we would select the leader.
Q: What would be your main issues for vidhan sabha polls?
A: Corruption-free Haryana, good governance and development.
Q: Which party would be the competitor of BJP in Haryana?
A: The contest would be with different parties in different seats. In a few seats, it would be with Congress. In another few seats, it will be Chatualaji (INLD) and on 1-2 seats Kuldeepji ( HJC).
Q: What would be your criteria for ticket allocation?
A: There are many parameters for allocating tickets. The candidate should also be winnable because in totality, we want to form the government. We would focus on giving a chance to those who are committed and have good character.
Q: Many leaders are trying to manage ticket for their relatives. What do you say on this?
A: No, no. Modiji has already made it clear that tickets would be given to workers, not relatives (of leaders).
