The great John Oliver has correctly identified Tucker Carlson's White Power Hour as a blight on our country's political discourse:
Last night, John Oliver addressed the elephant (farting) in the room (making it smell like absolute butt): The fact that Tucker Carlson continues to exist on millions of people’s television screens, spewing barely coded white-nationalist talking points and misinformation through a veneer of befuddlement. During the main segment of Last Week Tonight, Oliver charted Carlson’s underwhelming and opportunistic history in broadcast media, including a particularly lame interview with Britney Spears in 2003 (Oliver: “She is the definitional diva of the 2000s … put some respect on her name, and of course, #freebritney”). He also brought to light the ways in which more explicit white supremacists, like David Duke and James Allsup, follow and praise Carlson.
One of our significant threats right now is that of the American disinformation networks, specifically Fox News, OAN, and Newsmax. Carlson is trying to sustain Fox by appealing to a white nationalist crowd that has drifted away to the two more severely racist networks that are lined up to bring a pro-Trump, anti-democratic message to a confused and starving audience of deplorables.
I don't know how you can look at what Oliver explains in his segment and not conclude that the Republican Party and the conservative media establishment are all-in on a white nationalist agenda. They are going to hype these fears and try to win back some semblance of power in 2022 on Election Day. Which is ironic because they people hate democracy and want nothing to do with it.
I am hoping and praying that they will fail and one of the ways to ensure that happens is to remind people that white nationalists want to kill as many people as possible. Sounds crazy, but it's true. It really is.
