As most of us would know, Aadhar card is a unique 12 digit identification number which is issued by the Indian Government to every valid resident of India. This number is UDAI – Unique Identification Authority of India which ensures that all residents of India have a single but unique identification number and this number should have all the information possible for the individual.
Aadhaar Card to Become Necessary for Creating Facebook Account
Right now, there are too many identification options available like PAN card, Bank account number, Passport number etc which creates a lot of problem.
Understandably, Aadhar card is meant to save a lot of paperwork and give a unique identity to individuals. Hence many organizations like schools and railway booking centers are making it compulsory for you to have an Aadhar card.
What is next?
It seems next in line to adopt this method is Facebook. Yes, now it will be mandatory for you to have an Aadhar card number if you want to register on Facebook and open an account. If you do not have an Aadhar card number with you, you will need to wait to have one, before you even think of creating a Facebook account.
Why was this decision taken?
It seems because of irrelevant, multiple and dubious or fake accounts, this step has been made compulsory. As citizens cannot have more than one unique identification number, they will not be able to create multiple or fake accounts.
Also, accounts which create rumors or do not follow the cyber rules can easily be tracked and brought to justice. People would not be able to create accounts with fake names as the account will be linked to your real name through Aadhar.
What will be the process?
The process of opening an account on Facebook with Aadhar card number will be quite simple. You will need to submit a scanned copy when you try to sign up for an account on Facebook. You will be able to log in immediately after your submitted scanned copy will be verified. If it is verified successfully, you will be able to continue using Facebook, but if not your profile will be suspended.
Is this a good move?
Yes and No.
Yes, because the issue of fake profiles will be solved immediately. This will effect over 10 crore Facebook users all over India. Also, people will no longer be harassed by unknown group or people.
No, because it poses a threat to the information available on the database of Aadhar Card. At a single click, all your information on the Aadhar card will be made available to the advertisers or any organization. This could be a possible identity theft.
How will the government ensure the safety of identity of every individual remains to be seen.
For now, people are waiting and watching what else will the govt make compulsory with Aadhar card. It is widely mentioned that it is not compulsory but now, more or less everything you want to do requires you to have an Aadhar Card.
Will this be a successful move? Only time would tell.
