From the Editor's Desk: Big in Barcelona ...

I laid this out on this week's podcast, but the way we do trade shows is worth another Reminder here. See, we're headed to Mobile World Congress this week. And I'd be lying if I said going to Barcelona every year wasn't rad. (This'll be my seventh time, now that I think about it.) The city is beautiful — Spain used to run my hometown of Pensacola, so it's fun to see the similarities — the food is excellent, and it's great to catch up with the work friends we only get to see a handful of times a year.

But it is work. And it's more time on the road, and another week away from family. So we go balls-out and fit as much work into the week as we can, then sleep on the way home. (And usually for a few days afterward.) I'm not going to fly nearly 5,000 miles for work and then not work my ass off. Same for everyone else coming with us.

Basically that means we're going to Cover the hell out Mobile World Congress. We're going to cover every event, and every device as well as we possibly can. We're going to do what we always do and break things down like no other. We're probably — no, we definitely will — write more about one device or another than you think we should. And I'm OK with that. We're going to bring you as much information as we can in the time we have to do it in. It's what we do.

That's one thing I've never understood about this business. Folks Love every single rumor post that's done. But once something's official, it's just not as cool to talk about anymore. How does that make sense? Leaks and rumors are easy. The story doesn't stop there, though. It's only just beginning.

We'll have a full preview and schedule of events later this week. For now, I'll say what I'll say next Sunday morning:

Strap in.

A few other things I think I think:

  • Love seeing Steve Martin using Google Photos.
  • My dad's a lawyer and a judge. I've got a number of friends who have law degrees. There was a time, long ago, when I thought that might be what I wanted to do. So I take it pretty seriously. And that's why it's sad to immediately see the political wrangling after Justice Scalia's sudden death.
  • The GOP telling the president he shouldn't nominate anyone? What are we, 5 years old? That's just not how it works. At all.
  • I thought Dave Holmes had a good take.
  • And it's worth a reminder — this one from the L.A. Times in 2013 — that Scalia had some pretty important takes on the Fourth Amendment.
  • That's why the law is still fascinating to me. It's not always black and white. And why the usual political hand-wringing is so short-sighted in this sort of thing.
  • One more good read from Charles Pierce in Esquire.
  • Oh. Android? OK.
  • Jerry's Nexbit Robin unboxing cracked me up. So good.
  • Of course my Kickstarter phone won't be here until I've left for Spain. Figures.
  • Agree.
  • I spent much of the last week back on the LG G4, now with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. I'd forgotten how much I liked that phone. Makes me excited for the G5 next weekend.

OK, that's enough for this week. Happy love-someone-once-a-year-for-a-day day ...
