In one of my comments in my article More Offensive Muslim Jokes, I wrote that we need to make Islam disappear just as the Aztec Religion disappeared. In response, a visitor calling himself Anon E. Mouse left this comment:
"The Aztec Religion is the Mesoamerican religion" The Aztecs were a people. Try to stick to facts.
Sadly Anon misunderstands the meaning of the term Mesoamerican Religion. There are two considerations:
- When used in the context of pre-Columbian civilizations it categorizes the religions of the different peoples of Mesoamerica, such as the Maya, Aztec, Nahuas and others. It is similar to the term Abrahamic Religion which refers to the religions of the Jews, Christians, and Muslims (although I dispute that Islam is a religion).
I suppose Anon could also inform me that "The Jewish religion is the Abrahamic religion - the Jews were a people. Try to stick to facts". However, in this context, there is no religion such as The Abrahamic religion per se, it is a term which helps us categorize religions which trace their common origin to Abraham.
Likewise, in the context of pre-Columbian civilizations, there is no such religion as The Mesoamerican religion, it is merely a term which helps us categorize religions which trace their common origin to the indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica.
For details of the Aztec Religion, visit aztec-indians.com. The Aztec Religion is of course, one of many pre-Columbian Mesoamerican religions.
- When used in a modern context, there is indeed a faith by the name Mesoamerican religion, also called Christo-pagan, which is an amalgamation of indigenous beliefs and the Christianity of early Roman Catholic missionaries. However, The Mesoamerican Religion of today has little to do with the Aztec religion of old. Not one single sacrificial practice of the Aztec peoples is practiced today and it is more Christian than Mesoamerican.
