Chelsea have completed the signing of N’Golo Kanté from Leicester City for a fee of around £30m, with the France midfielder signing a five-year contract.

The 25-year-old has put pen to paper at Stamford Bridge ahead of the new season and has revealed his excitement ahead of joining up with his new team-matesnfirm signing of N’Golo Kanté from Leicester City.

Kanté, who made more tackles and interceptions than any other player in the Premier League last season, said the opportunity to work under the new Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, was “simply too good to turn down”.

“I am so happy to have signed for one of the biggest clubs in Europe. It’s a dream come true for me,” Kanté said. “The opportunity to work with Antonio Conte, a brilliant coach, and some of the best players in the world was simply too good to turn down. My first season in English football was very special and now I hope to go on to achieve even more during my time as a Chelsea player. I am looking forward to meeting up with my new team-mates and helping the club achieve a lot of success.”

Chelsea, who were beaten by Rapid Vienna in Conte’s first match in charge yesterday, made Kanté their second signing of the summer following the £33m deal for the Belgium striker Michy Batshuayi.

Despite turning a large profit, having signed Kanté for £5.5m from Caen last year, the transfer comes as a major blow to Leicester. The Premier League champions also face a battle to keep another of their star performers from last season, Riyad Mahrez, who is set to reject the club’s offer of a new contract amid widespread interest from across Europe. The Algeria attacker has indicated he wants a new challenge.

While Antonio Conte’s first game in charge of Chelsea ended in a low-key 2-0 defeat after his new side put in a sluggish pre-season display at Rapid Vienna.
Hours after completing the signing of the Leicester City midfielder N’Golo Kanté, Conte fielded a team missing a clutch of key players who were in action at Euro 2016, and gave fringe squad members including Victor Moses, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Papy Djilobodji a chance to impress. However, his beaten side still featured some key names, including captain John Terry, Diego Costa, Willian and Branislav Ivanovic.

Chelsea improved in the second half as Conte replaced Loftus-Cheek and Baba Rahman with Oscar and the academy graduate Ola Aina, but still failed to create real chances until Costa nodded a Djilobodji cross over the bar. With 20 minutes left the manager introduced Loïc Rémy and Kenedy, and the latter failed to connect with a good chance created by Moses late on.

The performance left Conte with plenty to ponder before Chelsea’s next pre-season friendly, against RZ Pellets on Wednesday, though the Kanté arrival took the edge off the disappointment.

“I’m very happy the club bought the player,” he said. “He has good technique, fantastic stamina and I like this type of player. We identified him, me and the club together, and I think he can enforce a zone which is very important if we want to play with two central midfielders.”

Antonio Conte insists Chelsea face hard road back to the top

Conte said he felt the defeat in Austria would prove “very important” in terms of learning lessons. “It’s important we now switch our minds to change. We must build through the work of our present and future. I’m unhappy with the loss and we’ll work very hard, because we want to come back and compete for the title.”
