Pokémon Go is the first smartphone release from The Pokémon Company, which has been looking after this multimillion-selling video game franchise since 1998. Created by augmented reality specialist Niantic Inc, the developer behind Google’s experimental AR game Ingress, it’s a massive-multiplayer, location-based spin-off from the role-playing fantasy series.Travel between the real world and the virtual world of Pokémon with Pokémon GO for iPhone and Android devices. With Pokémon GO, you’ll discover Pokémon in a whole new world—your own! Pokémon GO is built on Niantic’s Real World Gaming Platform and will use real locations to encourage players to search far and wide in the real world to discover Pokémon. Pokémon GO allows you to find and catch more than a hundred species of Pokémon as you explore your surroundings.

The Pokémon video game series has used real-world locations such as the Hokkaido and Kanto regions of Japan, New York, and Paris as inspiration for the fantasy settings in which its games take place. In Pokémon GO, the real world will be the setting!

Get on your feet and step outside to find and catch wild Pokémon. Explore cities and towns around where you live and even around the globe to capture as many Pokémon as you can. As you move around, your smartphone will vibrate to let you know you're near a Pokémon. Once you've encountered a Pokémon, take aim on your smartphone's touch screen and throw a Poké Ball to catch it. Be careful when you try to catch it, or it might run away! Also look for PokéStops located at interesting places, such as public art installations, historical markers, and monuments, where you can collect more Poké Balls and other items.

14 essential tips to get you started in Pokémon Go

Pokémon Go has caught the world by storm, sent Nintendo’s stock price rocketing, atheists into churches and Australians into police stations.

But it can be confusing and a lot of legwork, literally, if you screw something up – so here are a few tips to get you started.

1) Capture everything

It might seem obvious with “catch ‘em all” as the strap line for the game, but catching duplicates of Pokémon is good. Each time you catch a duplicate you still get the associated evolution candy, and you can transfer unwanted Pokémon to the professor for more candy. The more candy and star dust you have the more you can evolve the Pokémon you do want to keep.

2) What’s near you?

The meter in the bottom right side shows how close particular Pokémon are to your current location. Tapping on it will bring up a list. Any silhouettes are those Pokémon you haven’t encountered yet, while the footprints show relative distance to you. Tapping on a Pokémon in the list puts them in the corner so you can try and see if you can get closer to them.

3) Turn off AR

Using the camera on your smartphone to place Pokémon in the real world using augmented reality is fun, but it makes capturing Pokémon much harder. Turn it off to stop them moving around when you move your phone. It can be hard enough to hit them with Pokeballs when out on the street.

4) Hold your finger on the Pokeball

When trying to capture a Pokémon, hold your finger on your Pokeball before you throw it to see a small reticule appear on the Pokémon.

Its colour and size indicates how easy or hard capturing it will be.

Green is the easiest, orange medium and red hard. The smaller the circle the better the chance you will have to capture that beauty, so wait until it’s at its smallest before releasing and land it inside the circle.

5) Plough your Stardust and Candy into one or a few Pokémon

Candy can only be used to upgrade a Pokémon of the same type. Pick your champion wisely, particularly at the start. Selecting one to beef up that has plentiful duplicates within your normal walking routes allows you to use the stardust and candy you gain from capturing and transferring duplicates to power up a single or a few beasts to higher levels which will help you greatly in battle.

6) Don’t evolve your Pokémon too early

It’s tempting to use your Stardust and Candy immediately, but as your trainer levels up and you travel further afield, you’ll find higher starting level Pokémon. The higher the starting combat power (CP) of your Pidgey the stronger your evolved Pidgeotto will be, for instance.

7) Find Pokémon in their real-life habitats

You’re more likely to find rare Pokémon close to the environments in which they might live. Water Pokémon are more common near bodies of water, Ghastlys in grave yards, grass-types in parks, etc.

8) Evolved Pokémon are more powerful than their wild equivalents

A Pokémon evolved from its lowest to highest form will be more powerful than a wild Pokémon of the same class, so it’s worth capturing and working on a low-level Pokémon and levelling them up.

9) Don’t put your Pokémon into gyms too early

Putting weak Pokémon into gyms does no one any favours. You might hold it for your team initially, but only until it’s beaten by the opposition. You can’t train it up or swap it out, so you’re more likely to simply have it beaten and taken over, booting everyone out of the gym.

10) Hit PokeStops faster with the X

When you’ve hit a PokeStop and spun the sign you can just hit the X at the bottom to collect the items, you don’t have to burst each bubble to grab them.

11) The train or bus is a great way to stock up on items

Most of Pokémon Go requires you to be on your feet out on the street, but public transport is excellent for stocking up on items such as Pokeballs. All you’ve got to do is keep your phone open and start spinning a PokeStop before you get there. By the time your bus or train passes the PokeStop you will be spinning it, hit the X to collect all the items and onto the next one.

A 30-minute commute in a major city should be enough to fill all the space in your bag so that you always have enough Pokeballs to capture what you need. If you initiate an encounter with a Pokémon before you get too far away, you can also capture the mini beasts.

It doesn’t count towards your walking distance though; you’ll have to get out on the street to incubate those eggs.

12) Visit every PokeStop

Even if your bag is full, you still get 50XP from each visit to a PokeStop, which is quite a small amount, but can be very useful for levelling up when you first start. You need to reach level 5 before you are allowed to visit a gym.

13) Enable battery-saving mode and extend your screen off time

An hour’s usage can take up to 40% in my testing, enabling battery-saving mode in the app helps a little, as does turning down your screen brightness.

Accentuating the problem, you’ll need the app to be open and active for any walking to count, so go into your display settings and set the screen auto-off to 10 minutes or more.

An external battery case or USB battery pack is definitely recommended.

14) Disconnected means game over

You need both strong data and GPS for Pokémon Go to work. If data or GPS drops out mid-encounter you will lose your progress. The app also has issues coming back from standby occasionally, requiring you to quit and relaunch it to keep playing, even if it is showing you moving on a map.
