Immediately from its opening minutes, you can sense that we re in the universe of Jason Katims withDear Edward. The series is slickly produced and wears its heart on its sleeve, with themes of family and bereavement running through its large cast of characters.

Yet, Katim’s major concerns of deep emotion and aiming to make you cry every five minutes filter its central message of connection among those grieving as a result of a plane tragedy through comparable renowned presentations.

Ready Steady Cut has five suggestions for you that are worth checking out if you enjoy the series or are curious about other programs of a similar nature, some of which were even created by Katims.

5 TV Shows like Dear Edward you must watch

Friday Night Lights (2006-2011)

The combination of creator/executive producer Jason Katims and star Connie Britton amongst one of the great television ensemble casts helped to makeFriday Night Lightsone of the best series on the air during its run, but also one of the most underrated, constantly facing cancellation despite critical acclaim and having a small but devoted audience.

Although the writing, acting, and direction in this film have a subtle naturalism that is almost the exact opposite of the heightened dramas of Dear Edward, it is also infused with a delicate sweetness and has the power to either break or lift your heart like nothing else ever shown on screen. This film may be the best representation of Katims and his style of storytelling.

Parenthood (2010 2015)

Parenthood, a second attempt to adapt Ron Howard’s 1989 film for the small screen, was exemplary of Katim’s talent for assembling a carefully chosen ensemble cast and having them play out scenes that could run the gamut of emotions, from gently humorous to emotionally devastating.

Even though it had a smaller audience than his most recent show or even Friday Night Lights, the show still found many of its best moments and strengths in some superbly performed character dramas among its carefully chosen lead cast, which included Mae Whitman and Lauren Graham.

Lost (2004 2010)

The ghost of J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof’s renowned sci-fi drama looms over any television program that explores the effects of an aviation accident.

While a very heightened series, not to mention set on a desert island,Lostdoes shareDear Edward sability to command a large ensemble cast and storytelling that is sometimes deceptively complex in its portrayal of the human connection.

Manifest (2018 Present)

Like Lost, Manifest leans more toward science fiction. Still, it addresses the effects of an airline disaster through the lens of central characters attempting to mend things after the fact, much like Dear Edward did.

The distinction in this case is that it involves characters who vanished mid-flight and then emerged again years later in a fairly inventive sci-fi storyline. Occasionally daft, it s also very engaging. LikeLostand Dear Edward, it finds a lot to mine from not only the complexity of its storytelling and ideas of connectivity but also in the performances of its leads.

This Is Us (2016 2022)

Perhaps the biggest example in recent years of a star-led weepy on the small screen, while Katims was not involved inThis is Us, it feels like something within his wheelhouse of portraying big emotional beats to audience-pleasing effect amongst a brilliant ensemble cast and finding a way to have it endure as a long-running television series.

One of the biggest programs to air in the US in recent years; some might sneer at it for being sentimental and manipulative, but there s no doubting that it s incredibly effective in what it does, and its shock reveal in the very first episode was a true surprise.
