Everyday Sexism: Jennifer Aniston on The Toxic Media and Objectification of Women

As I'm sure many of you are aware, Jennifer Aniston has released a public statement today on Huffington Post, entitled 'For The Record'.

In it, Aniston dispels the myth that she is pregnant; denounces the media and states that "The objectification and scrutiny we put women through is absurd and disturbing".

I am strongly inclined to agree.

Aniston is no stranger to being the subject of media attention. She has had to withstand speculation about her personal life throughout her career, having successfully navigated her way through Hollywood after 'Friends' disbanded (unlike many of the other cast members - how's Top Gear treating you Matt LeBlanc?).  Previously, she admits, she told herself that the media was not to be taken seriously, but more recently has not been able to due to the "stalking and objectification [she has] experienced first-hand, going on decades now,  [which] reflects the warped way we calculate women's worth".

Dove have recently launched a campaign called #MyBeautyMySay. They state that 7/10 women receive more comments on their appearance than their achievements - and to be honest, it surprised me it wasn't higher. That is abysmal.

The campaign is highlighting people like Heather, who is 'too pretty to fight'. Video and article here.

All in all, I'm not surprised Aniston is pissed. She has every right to be. For we still live in a world where a woman in a developed country becomes Prime Minister, and the headlines are focused on her footwear.

Quite frankly I hope more influential women speak out about the media's repugnant commentary on the female gender. Because it's 2016, and that should be reason enough to stop reporting through a sexist lens.
