This year seems to be thee year of DC Comics. First, DC Comics released one of the most anticipated films of the year (Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice), and now we have ‘Suicide Squad’. Is Suicide Squad worth the price of a cinema ticket, or should you just wait until the film is released on DVD?
Plot: The Government recruits a team of imprisoned criminals as an expendable task force to handle preternatural threats. The Film, set in the DC Universe, also briefly features Batman and more prominently, the Joker – who has an unexpected agenda.
What’s good: Suicide Squad makes for a well-executed supervillian-turned-superhero film. DC Comics’ movies seem to display a more dark, deep theme than Marvel Comics’ films, but this theme is well suited to the nature of the movie, which is certainly unique. A star-studded cast consisting of Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie and many more A-listers, pull off brilliant action scenes, which are well complimented by comic (no pun intended) relief.
What’s not so good: Some plot holes and mismatched scenes slightly affect the story’s continuity and lead to slight confusion. When watching the movie, you don’t realise what information you’ve missed (or, is missing), but when thinking back, you see small issues that you don’t notice ‘in the moment’.
Verdict: Suicide Squad is an entertaining, much awaited film that didn’t miss any action. The film still begs the question whether a sequel is viable, or if you’d want to watch it more than once, but whether with a crash, an explosion, a laugh or a scream – you’re guarenteed to be entertained throughout each minute of DC Comics’ new film.
The Rating: 8.5/10
