TRENTON, NJ/December 23, 2017 (STL.News) Governor Christie released the attached video accompanied with transcript Wednesday, December 20, 2017:
Governor Christie: Expungement has to be an option that’s available to those who have earned it and who deserve it, and this legislation will allow people to get that. In the end I was really happy, although I was a little disappointed because of all the other things we had to get done in June, that we didn’t get this done in June. But in retrospect, I’m sure this must have been Steve’s plan, in retrospect, you know, the fact is that I think signing a bill like this five days before Christmas is a really, really good thing to do. It reminds people that God is forgiving, and that God made us in his image, and that we need to be forgiving, too. That we need to give those who have truly earned forgiveness the chance to be forgiven. And I spend a lot of my career putting people in jail who deserved to go, and that doesn’t change any of this. But those people are going to eventually going to come out of jail and what do we want them to be when they come out? What do we want them to have an opportunity to do? Do want them to have hope in their lives? Do we want them to have a sense of no opportunity, which will lead inevitably to more crime and more disappointment—and ultimately the loss of life. So, I’ll end where I started. Senator Cunningham, I appreciate your partnership ion this and your friendship greatly. And what we signed and put into law today, you know and I know, are going to change lives. And I thank the Senate President, because once again, this is a display of what people putting partisan differences to the side and working together really can accomplish.
