St. Louis’ Top 10 Brunch Spots in 2017

The 10 Best Brunches in St. Louis

St. Louis, MO/December 20, 2017 (STL.News) – They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  And many people consider Brunch the best meal ever invented.  It includes everything we love about breakfast but adds in our favorite lunch fare, plus booze—and we get to sleep in.  Invented as an old English “hangover cure,” this late morning to mid-afternoon meal is as popular as ever—and there are more places in St. Louis than ever to indulge our brunch habits.  From simple pastry purveyors with excellent espresso drinks to grand buffets with Bloody Mary bars, there are restaurants that offer a brunch for every taste.

Like we do with all our top 10 lists, when we wanted to know who does brunch best, we turned to customer reviews.  What we found was a nice assortment of restaurants that run from casual bakery cafes to fine dining establishments.  Topping the best brunch list this year is Local Chef Kitchen in Ballwin.  Chef Rob Uyemura’s fast-casual restaurant opened in February 2016 with the mission of bringing affordable, imaginative cuisine based on locally sourced, fresh food to the community.  And it doesn’t get any fresher than Uyemura’s place.  The chef uses produce that he himself has grown, along with ingredients sourced from local farms to create an ever-changing menu of reimagined American classics.

Breakfast at Local Chef Kitchen is served every weekend from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., meaning it works well for the midday brunch crowd.  The menu includes Eggs Benedict, omelets, slingers, and breakfast sandwiches.  You’ll also find pancakes, French toast, fried potatoes, plus house-smoked bacon and house-cured ham.  Fresh fruit, biscuits, toast, English muffins, and vegetarian options are also available.  As if a great meal wasn’t enough, packaged, locally sourced, pasture-raised meats, free range poultry, cage-free eggs, hormone-free milk, cheese, and ice cream, as well as locally made Kombucha are all available for purchase too.  It’s worth noting that in October 2016, Local Chef Kitchen was the #1 pick for The Best Dog-Friendly Restaurants in St. Louis, according to customer reviews.  So, when the weather warms and you want to brunch with Fido, this place should be on your short list.

Our list of the Top 10 brunch spots around St. Louis has changed since we first published it in December 2016.  But a few of last year’s favorites made this year’s list too.  Egg, Picasso’s Coffee House, and Russell’s on Macklind have remained among St. Louis’ favorite places to brunch.  In compiling this year’s list, we have noted which establishments serve alcoholic beverages with brunch, since for some of us the Bloody Mary is our favorite part of the meal.  So, here are the top 10 brunch spots in St. Louis this year, according to customer reviews:

Brunch may be one of the most popular meals in St. Louis.  There are hundreds of restaurants offering brunch all over town.  There are so many great places that didn’t make the top 10, we wanted to share a few more of our favorites with you.  So, to these great brunch stops we offer Honorable Mentions:

Candicci’s Restaurant & Bar (3.59 stars/138 reviews) Ballwin, 100 Holloway Road, Ballwin, MO 63011, (636) 220-8989.  Sunday mornings they do breakfast starting at 9:00 a.m.  But you can start this weekend repast with a traditional Bloody Mary, screwdriver, or mimosa, elevating the experience.  The menu includes everything you want in a leisurely brunch experience.  There are omelets, frittatas, pancakes (including whole wheat and gluten free options), really good French toast, even better Eggs Benedict, steak and eggs, or try the signature Candicci’s Slider (Country Fried Steak topped with southern hash browns, homemade chili, 3 eggs cooked to order and cheddar cheese).  You can add a lobster tail to any meal. Lobster at breakfast is always special.

Red Oak Eats ‘N Treats (4.85 stars/26 reviews) Downtown, 1330 Washington Ave, Saint Louis, MO 63103, (314) 339-5070.  This downtown restaurant offers breakfast and brunch all day. Customers love their seasonal, homestyle cuisine.  This is a farm to table restaurant—or as they call it, a “room to table” restaurant since they grow some of their own lettuce in house, in their hydroponic garden.  Everything is scratch made and thoughtfully prepared.  A good example is Nanna’s French toast.  It’s made with brioche and a rich egg custard, then served with banana slices and walnuts.  You can have it with real maple syrup if you like.  The counter service model at Red Oak means you never have to wait for a table.

The Mud House (4.41 stars/886 reviews) Benton Park, 2101 Cherokee Street, Saint Louis, MO 63118, (314) 776-6599.  This was last year’s top spot, and still well worth your attention.  This casual, but sophisticated eatery along Cherokee Street’s Antiques Row is a great destination for all the sweet and savory brunch staples you crave.  They also have a great selection of fresh coffees, espresso drinks, and teas.  Whether you’re looking for sweet standards like French toast or savory choices like grits and greens, The Mud House Delivers. Everything is locally sourced, expertly prepared, and served in relaxing environment.  And isn’t that what brunch is supposed to be all about?
