Krieger’s Restaurant Joins Community in Raising Funds for Officer O’Conner

Dine Out for Arnold Police Officer Ryan O’Connor at Krieger’s Restaurant

ST. LOUIS, MO/December 14, 2017 (STL.News) Once again tragedy has brought communities near and far together and brought out the best in humankind.  Krieger’s restaurant in Twin Oaks is joining together with other area restaurants to hold a Dine Out for 44-year-old Ryan O’Connor, the Arnold Police Officer recently shot in the line of duty.

O’Connor was shot inside a Police SUV last Tuesday afternoon while transporting a burglary suspect to the police station to be booked.  The suspect, identified by police as 29-year-old Chad Klahs of Arnold, shot himself in the head after shooting O’Connor and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Capt.  Gary Higginbotham, the suspect had taken one gun during the burglary and stole a second gun from a vehicle at an auto body shop.  When officers arrested Klahs, they took away one gun before handcuffing him and placing him in the back of the SUV, but were apparently unaware of the second gun.  Klahs was able to access the second concealed weapon and shoot the officer before shooting himself, Higginbotham said.

Klahs had his probation revoked in 2014 and he was ordered jailed again.  It is unclear when he was most recently released from custody.

O’Connor sustained life-threatening injuries after being shot in the back of the neck or head.  He remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition with a long, difficult road to recovery ahead of him.

O’Connor comes from a law enforcement family.  He is the son of former Maryland Heights Police Chief Tom O’Connor, and had been with the Arnold Police Department for approximately three years.  He had previously worked in St. Louis County and Ferguson, police said.  He is married and the father of four children.

The financial needs for Ryan’s wife and four young children will be extensive as he fights for his life.

Dine Out for Officer O’Connor and be a part of helping out this wonderful family through their time of tragedy.
