Hamburger Mary’s Bringing Flamboyant Dining Experience Back to St. Louis

Huge New Downtown Hamburger Mary’s to Open in New Year

St. Louis, MO/December 12, 2017 (STL.News) – Some bars are unique.  Others are legendary.  The national franchise that is Hamburger Mary’s is downright notorious.  After a three-year absence, the drag themed restaurant and supper club franchise is returning to St. Louis.  New owners have announced plans to open in a 10,000-square foot space at 400 Washington Avenue this January. St. Louis’ original Hamburger Mary’s opened at 3037 Olive Street in 2011.  It closed three years ago.

The new downtown location will feature Hamburger Mary’s traditional diner classics and cocktails, along with the star-studded drag shows and quirky entertainment the brand is known for.  Michael Dutzer and Rob Mansman, who own the Miss Gay America and Mr. Gay America pageants, have partnered with St. Louisan David Pardue in the new venture.  Miss Gay America is the longest running, and most prestigious female impersonator competition in the world.  So, it’s not too surprising that this team is bringing an all-star line-up of drag queen entertainers to the downtown St. Louis location.

In addition to the daily entertainment, the new Hamburger Mary’s downtown will also be the new home for the two pageants.  The Miss Gay Heart of America regional preliminary will take place there in March.  That will be followed by the national Mr. Gay America competition in mid-summer, and the spectacular Miss Gay America nationals pageant in October.

Hamburger Mary’s bills itself as “an open-air restaurant for the open minded where everyone is welcome.”  More than simply a “gay bar,” the restaurants are perhaps most famous for their ability to draw customers from all walks of life to dine and enjoy a drag show, join in a show-tune sing-along, play charity bingo, or participate in a trivia night.  National franchise co-owner Brandon Wright says he’s thrilled that Hamburger Mary’s is returning to St. Louis.  He says they’ve found the perfect franchise partners in Dutzer, Mansman, and Pardue. “We are anticipating an exciting and glamorous future for Hamburger Mary’s St. Louis, thanks to our new partnership,” Wright said.

In October, Hamburger Mary’s began introducing the new St. Louis cast on the restaurant’s Facebook page.  The showbill lists both local talent and national acts, including the reigning Miss Gay America, Asia O’Hara, who will also be show director.  Partner and manager David Pardue says they plan to keep things fresh by adding a constant stream of guest performers as well.  “It will be the premier location for some of the best female impersonators from across the country,” he said.

The new Hamburger Mary’s at Washington Avenue and North 4th Street will be one of the largest in the 19-restaurant franchise.  The former catering hall is getting a makeover, including the addition of a stage and new bathrooms.  When it opens, they’ll be able to seat 250-300 for dinner and up to 400 for the bigger shows.

A specific opening date has not yet been announced, but the St. Louis partnership is indicating they should be ready for a grand opening in January.  The hours for the St. Louis restaurant and club haven’t been announced yet, but Hamburger Mary’s in other markets typically cater to late night diners.  When it opens, the new Hamburger Mary’s in downtown St. Louis is promising friendly service, a mouth-watering menu, and an overall flamboyant dining experience.
