St. Louis, MO/December 6, 2017 (STL.News) – Throughout the holidays we highlight many of the area’s most astonishing, outdoor light displays but there are also many other festive activities that are sure to put you in the holiday spirit! One very popular event is the fully-staged musical version of Charles Dickens’ classic tale, A Christmas Carol at The Fox Theatre!
A trip to the Fabulous Fox is in itself a delight, but during the holiday season it’s the perfect time to experience the ambiance of the theater while watching one of the most beloved Christmas stories of all time. Dickens tale,’ A Christmas Carol, is most certainly timeless and the fully-staged musical version has become a real Yuletide tradition.
When the book first appeared, just before Christmas 1843, it was immediately admired by both the reading public, as well as the critics. A Christmas Carol has never gone out of print, and by the beginning of the 1840s, it would be adapted for the stage, and Dickens himself would perform public readings of it.
The fully-staged musical version of A Christmas Carol was later adapted by Charles Jones, former executive director of the Omaha Community Playhouse in Omaha, Nebraska. This special musical adaption has been touring since 1979 and has garnered the position of being one of the most widely viewed productions of the Dickens tale in the nation. The Caravan performs it for over 100,000 people in more than 60 cities across the country annually.
The heartening tale portrays the measly miser Ebenezer Scrooge, whose values are centered solely on profit and his scraps with the struggling Cratchit family, whose heart-rending problems epitomized the working class during the Industrial Revolution in Victorian England. The moving highpoint of the story is built on Dickens’ belief that the evils of a greedy world can be healed by loyalty and selflessness.
The Fox Theatre presentation of A Christmas Carol features a high-spirited ensemble of 23 performers who bring Dickens’ tale of redemption to life on an enchanted set created by renowned designer James Othuse. The Victorian period is successfully recreated by the use of imaginative scenery and elaborates costumes.
There will be an entire collection of enduring carols such as “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” “Away in a Manger” and “Here We Come A-Wassailing” intertwined within this unforgettable story. Add to that the extraordinary voices, the vivacious dancing and the astounding special effects and you have a spectacular holiday treat for the entire family.
