The NJAC row bring HC judges' appointment to a standstill

| The courts and the government have been battling over fundamental differences in the process through which judges are appointed for over five months.
The deadlock has brought the higher judiciary appointments to a standstill beside asking tricky questions about the system.
In the present scenario, the "high courts only have about half the judges that they need, with vacancies up to about 400."

Make MoP on appointment of judges: SC to Centre

| Supreme Court directed the government to make a memorandum of procedure (MOP) to appoint senior judiciary.
The MOP on appointment of judges in higher judiciary would be achieved with deliberation of the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
The SC said "transparency is the most important aspect in selection and appointment of judges" which should get reflected in the proceedings for the selections.

SC reproaches Centre, says stop stalling, appoint judges

| The Supreme Court reprimanded the Modi government of "stalling" the appointments of high court judges.
The bench said the Centre government was venturing a "lockout" in the judiciary and reducing it to an "onslaught".
It was highlighted that most HCs were "at less than 60% of their strength."
The SC directed the Centre to make the necessary appointments which were 8 months due.

34 out of 77 names cleared for HC appointments

| The government has informed the Supreme Court that 34 out of 77 names put up for High Court appointments have been approved; it added that the remaining 43 names have been sent back to the collegium.
Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said not a single file on appointment of judges is pending with the government.
The SC had lambasted the centre for slow judicial appointments.

Ignoring Centre, Collegium re-appoints the same 43 HC judges

| The Collegium presided by the Chief Justice of India reiterated its appointment of 43 HC judges.
The Centre had held reservation on these appointments claiming that "no uniform criteria was followed in the selection of the 43" and had asked the Collegium to reconsider.
This decision is expected to once again stir the tensions between the judiciary and the Centre over judicial appointments.

SC finalizes judicial appointments procedure

| Sources said the Supreme Court has finalized the memorandum of procedure (MoP) for appointing judges to constitutional courts.
The SC and the Centre had sparred on the issue for the last one year. The court took into consideration the Centre's national security clause while appointing judges to higher courts.
The court said it would also finalize appointments to the high courts soon.

51 names cleared for HC judge posts

| The Supreme Court Collegium has cleared 51 names for appointments as judges to 10 high courts in India. The announcement was made shortly after finalizing the memorandum of procedure for the appointment of judges to constitutional courts.
The list originally contained 90 names recommended by various high court collegiums.
41% of the judges posts in 24 high courts still remain vacant.
