  • Since February 9, 2017, students at Jawahar Lal University have been protesting the implementation of the University Grants Commission's (UGC) notification of May 2016.

    Why are students protesting?
    Crux of the matter
  • UGC released a notification in May 2016 which made 'viva voce' a key admission criteria for admissions to Phd and MPhil courses.
  • Policy also restricts the number of PhD students a teacher will be able to mentor which can effectively reduce seats in research courses in the future.
  • University has released a modified admission process that students are demanding clarity on from the administration.

  • Statement by JNUSU
    FACT
"We reiterate that any change in admission policy without due discussions and deliberations in the Academic Council of the university, which is the statutory body for any such decision, will be resisted."

Deadlock between University Admin and students
    Key reasons
  • JNU Students' Union President, Mohit Pandey, claims changes made to admission process violate the JNU Act, 1966.
  • University officials however dismiss allegations by students and said students are "unruly" and the ongoing protest is "unwarranted and deplorable".
  • The university has also rubbished claims that the new admission policy will reduce seats in research courses and state on the contrary vacancies will increase.

  • JNU Vice Chancellor threatens legal action
    FACT
Statement: "This trespassing is criminal and violation of law of the land. JNU administration will continue to put sense in this small group of unruly students by talking to them. If that fails, the law will take its course."

    17 Mar 2017
  • Students from JNU gathered in protest of the UGCs new rule that sought to allocate 50% grades to the viva portion of exams for MPhil and PhD candidates, instead of 30% as was originally the case.
