Using Garden Row Covers for the Cold Season

If you have an extensive garden that you love taking care of, then you should know that during the cold season, your plants needs as much protection as they can get. This is where Garden Row Covers come into play. They are multifunctional and extremely useful. They can protect the plants from excessive cold, insects, and even overheating in the summertime. What we are going to be focusing on today is how they can be used in the cold season. But not before we explore some types of garden row covers.

Types of Garden Row Covers

There are more types of garden row covers that you can use to protect your plants, depending on your necessities. But let’s take a look at two of the options that work during the winter.

For instance, there is the All-Purpose Garden Fabric provided by Gardener’s Supply Company. This keeps the heat in and the insects out. It allows 70% of the light coming from outside to reach the plants. It is also great to protect plants from strong wind, but at the same time rain can pass through it, helping irrigate the garden.

The GardenQuilt by the same company is thicker than the previous one. It allows only 60% of the light to reach the plants. However, it is a great option for the cold season, as it will protect the plants from frost damage down to 24 degrees Fahrenheit.

How to Use Garden Row Covers in the Cold Season

First of all, your plants might need protection in the fall too, not only in the winter. There are certain types of crops such as peppers or tomatoes, that are more sensitive to cold. They might benefit from garden row covers during the fall. One way in which you can protect them is to unwrap some fabric over the areas that need it, and use earth staples to secure the cover.

Depending on the type of winter you are experiencing where you live, you might need the GardenQuilt to keep your plants safe from extreme cold. This is especially true in the case of sensitive perennials. What we recommend you to do is wait until the first frost. Then cut any dead foliage you might find, fertilize the plants with grass clippings or straws, and cover them up.

Remember that no matter what type of garden row covers you use, you must remove snow that gets stored on top of them. If you fail to do so, the cover might collapse under the weight, damaging your plants. Just take a broom and push the snow off the cover, it is easy to accomplish and it doesn’t take a lot of time. It is even easier if the covers are made of plastic. But the disadvantage here would be that after snow storms, the plants might need some venting. And that can be difficult to do when there is a lot of snow surrounding the cover.

Overall, your plants require protection no matter where you live. But if you live someplace where the winter season is extremely harsh, we hope our advice will help you take care of your garden in the best way possibile.
