DIY wind chimes can be very inexpensive to make. Some wind chimes can be made for nothing, depending what materials you have available around your home. Recyclable Materials

Making DIY wind chimes out of recyclable materials is not only a fun experience but a great way to reuse items that you don’t need or that will be discarded anyway. Recyclable materials could include old teapots or teacups, keys, spoons or other silverware, bottle caps, mason or other types of canning jars, glass bottles, beads, seashells or sea glass, terra cotta pots, or other items that you don’t need and would otherwise throw away.

Good Places to Hang Wind Chimes

The best place to hang a wind chime is an area where the wind will blow from all directions. For example, instead of hanging the wind chime right next to your house, put it out in an open area. A tree or porch is a great place to hang a wind chime.

Make sure that you hang it in a place where you can enjoy it every day. Some people prefer to hang their wind chimes indoors in an area where it can catch a breeze. If you will be hanging your wind chime indoors, hang it in a place where it is out of harm’s way, especially if you have young children or pets in your home.

Vintage wind chimes can be made from many different kinds of materials. Common materials could include old teacups, spoons, and keys, or any other recyclable materials that you don’t need.

Colorful Wind Chimes

Colorful wind chimes, unlike vintage wind chimes, can add a colorful and creative look to your home. The materials you use will vary since almost anything can be used to make a colorful wind chime. Common materials include beads, stained glass, decorative ceramic planters, and painted terra cotta pots.

Seashore Wind Chimes

Many DIY wind chimes are made with seashore items like seashells and sea glass. If you live near the beach, you may be able to find some of these items to make your own. Maybe you have collected seashells or sea glass on fun family vacations and a wind chime is a fun way to preserve those memories. Otherwise, you can order seashells and sea glass online.  Whether you live near the beach or not, a seashore wind chime is sure to bring style and beauty to your home.

Making wind chimes is a great activity to make with your kids. Although your children can help make any kind of wind chime, some are specifically geared more for kids. How to Make Wind Chimes

Homemade wind chimes are very easy to make and require little time to create. As we learned previously in this article, homemade wind chimes can be made from many different types of materials. The following are some unique DIY wind chimes for you to make.

DIY Wind Chime Made from Bottle Caps

Making wind chimes out of bottle caps is a great way to recycle the caps. Any caps will work for this homemade wind chime. Here’s what you’ll need:

• Wood scrap
• Metal bottle caps
• Hammer
• Small nail
• Fishing line
• Thin piece of copper
• Tin shears
• Metal hook

Directions:

1. Place one bottle cap onto the wood scrap.  Set the nail in the center, and tap it gently with the hammer.  The nail should make a hole in the metal bottle cap.   Once it does, remove the nail and turn the cap over.  Tap the hammer on the sharp edges on the underside of the cap so that the edges get pushed down.  Repeat this process until all of the caps have holes in them.
2. Cut five strands of 3-foot fishing line, and tie a knot on each one at the end.
3. Take the fishing line and thread it through the bottle cap.  Tie a knot where you want the next cap to be, and slide the next cap onto the fishing line.  Continue doing this until you have all the caps that you want on the strands.  Leave 6 inches at the end without caps.
4. With the tin shears, cut a thin piece of metal around 6 inches across.  The metal piece can be any shape.
5. Cut 4 holes on the bottom edge of the metal piece.  Use the hammer and nail to punch the holes.  Next, punch one hole onto the center of the metal piece.
6. Thread the strands through the holes and tie them in place, so that each strand is a different length.  Add a drop of strong glue on the knots so that it is extra secure.
7. Tie the ends of the strands to a hook.
8. Hang the wind chime and enjoy!

Seashore Wind Chimes

If you live near the beach, you can collect your own sea glass. If you don’t, you can order sea glass online. Sea glass wind chimes are one of the easiest wind chimes to make. Make tiny holes in each sea glass and insert a transparent thread through it.  

Next, hang them from a piece of driftwood and add a bead at the end to secure the knot.

Vintage Teapot Wind Chime

If you are into vintage teapots, then you will enjoy making this wind chime. It is very easy to make and can add a pretty look to your home. Here are the supplies you will need:

• A metal teapot
• Keys
• A bell
• Hemp, or another kind of tough string
• A drill and a 1/8 inch drill bit
• 5 minute epoxy

Directions:

1. Tie a piece of hemp onto each key.  Make sure the hemp is long enough so that the keys hang when the hemp is folded in half.  Do this for about eight keys.  Also do the same thing for the bell.
2. Drill holes evenly in a circle through the bottom of the teapot.  However many keys you have, make that many holes in the pot.  Drill one hole in the middle for the bell.
3. Thread both pieces of the hemp in each key through a hole and tie a knot.  Do the same thing for the bell.
4. Next, you will need to add the epoxy so that the lid on the teapot will stay on.  To do this, squeeze the epoxy on a piece of cardboard.  Use the stick that comes with the epoxy to apply it to the underside of the teapot lid.  Once you are done applying the epoxy, close the lid.  Hold the lid closed until the epoxy dries.  If you want, you can stuff a paper towel through the spout to prevent bees from making a home in the teapot.  This, however, is optional.
5. Cut a piece of hemp long enough to fold in half, and then loop through the top of the teapot.  Tie it to the tea pot.
6. Hang your wind chime and enjoy!
