Grub Control: Do I really need it?

We totally get it; you’re trying to save a buck like everybody else, and one of the best ways to do that is avoid purchasing unnecessary services or products you don’t really need.

So, is grub control for your lawn really necessary, or is it simply a waste of your precious dime?

It’s a good question and, unfortunately, we don’t have a firm answer for you. You may need it, you may not. Here’s what we do know – grub prevention is significantly less expensive than grub control or repair should your property wind up with a grub outbreak. Once those wily critters sink their teeth into your turf, you have a (literally) ugly mess on your hands and it’s costly to replace all that beautiful green lawn.

What Are Grubs?

Grubs, white grubs or lawn grubs are all names for the larval form of the beautiful scarab beetle species. While the adults are gorgeous, their immature grub forms are ugly and downright dangerous for your lawn. These caterpillar-like forms are white with brown heads and they often curl up like a “C” when disturbed. Grubs feast on grass roots as well as organic nutrients in the soil. It’s like a double-whammy for your lawn because in addition to doing irreparable damage to the root system, they also strip the soil of precious nutrients. Unfortunately for us, grubs love the climate here in Pennsylvania, so grub activity in our area is very high.

Typically, their heaviest feeding time is late-summer and early fall. However, their lifecycles can range anywhere from one to three years, so you can see damage during other warm parts of the year as well. Grub lawn damage looks like big, irregular dead patches and once those appear, there is nothing you can do but cut out sections of your turf and lay new sod down. And, of course, if you haven’t eradicated the grubs – the destructive cycle will simply pick up where it left off.

Do I Really Need Grub Control or Are You Trying To Upsell Me, Buddy?

As certified lawn care specialists, Joshua Tree offers grub control as part of our lawn care services. Statistics tell us that grubs will affect most lawns each and every year, so we recommend grub and pest prevention/control on an annual basis.

Often, homeowners stand on their beautiful expanses of lush, green lawn each spring and ask me, “Josh, you’ve treated my lawn with grub agents for a number of years now; do I really need to sign up for grub prevention again this year?” I smile and reply, “Are you happy with the way the lawn looks today…?”

A simple drive through our Allentown and Bethlehem PA neighborhoods will provide instant insight into who uses grub prevention measures and who doesn’t. If you’ve used grub prevention agents in the past and your lawn looks beautiful, I highly advise you continue using grub prevention agents to keep your lawn looking beautiful. It’s as simple as that. Grub control measures need to be taken on annual basis to work consistently. Skipping a year may be fine, but if any beetles have laid their eggs in your lawn’s soil over the course of that last year, you can be looking at a seriously damaged lawn by mid-fall. The cost from prevention to full-blown control/eradication and repair will easily double.

Grub control and eradication requires the use of more expensive products, and refurbishing the lawn requires even more expensive labor and maintenance. This includes removing the infested areas of turf, controlling the grubs that are present, installing new lawn and then the maintenance required by the addition of a new lawn. That’s a whole lot of financial and energetic investment that could have been avoided with the simple and affordable act of signing up for grub control.

So, what do you think? Is grub control really worth it? If you determine it is, contact Joshua Tree or give us a call, (610) 365-2200, so we can get you on the books.
