Maryland Native Plants That Thrive
LGS Notes: Red chokeberry is a more colorful alternative to the black chokeberry, however, its red berries are not as attractive to birds. I have read that the red berries do persist long into winter making for winter interest and a great source of late food for birds. It provides vivid color throughout fall and winter, and it is more deer resistant than black chokeberry. This shrub can be planted in clay soil, to prevent erosion, or as part of a sunny rain garden. I like to combine it with Ironweed for a nice fall foliage and purple flower combination. Other perennials I like to plant with chokeberry include tickseed, the shorter varieties of goldenrod, gayfeather and joe pye weed and moss and creeping phlox.
