A “Wolf Moon” Will Appear on New Year’s Day 2018

According to CNN and other sources, NASA has just reported that the first supermoon of 2018 will take place on January 1, New Year’s Day.

The moon, which is being referred to as a “wolf moon”, takes its title from the traditional Native American term for the first Full Moon in January, which is named after howling wolves. (This is because wolves howl more during their breeding season, which is in January and February. In some cultures, the first moon in January is known as the Old Moon, the Ice Moon, the Snow Moon, or the Moon after Yule. Historically, all of them were named after seasonal occurrences that people in the Northern Hemisphere were to likely experience during this time of year.)

What is being referred to as a “wolf moon” takes its title from the traditional Native American term for the first Full Moon in January, which is named after howling wolves.

NASA also reports that there will be another supermoon just a few weeks later, towards the end of January. The moon will Reach Peak Fullness at 9:24 PM EST, at which time, according to EarthSky.org and Space.com, the moon will be “about 221,559 miles (356,565 kilometers) from Earth.”

Space.com also reports that the second moon of the month will be a “super blue blood moon”, which will reach peak fullness on January 31, 2018. (As you might imagine, blue moons are rare occurances– thus the expression “once in a blue moon”– but they don’t always appear blue. In this case the term “blue moon” simply refers to the appearance of a second full moon, or total lunar eclipse, in any given month; usually, there is only one. In some areas, for example, the moon might appear red.)

This is great time to brush up on your knowledge of lunar planting! Or to read this month’s botanical horoscope.
