Events We Love: The SAFE Disposal Series In NYC

Looking for a place to (properly) dispose of your batteries, lightbulbs, and old paint? Yeah, us too.

Contrary to popular belief, not everything you buy can be put in the trash– and we’re not just talking about composting.

On September 24th from 10 AM to 4 PM, the NYC Department of Sanitation will be holding a series of SAFE Disposal Events (Solvents, Automotive, Flammable, Electronics) to provide NYC residents with a one-stop method to get rid of harmful household products that can be dangerous for people and the environment when thrown in the trash. Did you know, for example, that LED lightbulbs contain trace amounts of mercury that can become gaseous (meaning, you can inhale it) whenever a bulb breaks? Also, did you know that you’re not supposed to throw old AA batteries in the trash, because they can leak battery acid into the water supply?

Contrary to popular belief, not everything you buy can be put in the trash– and we’re not just talking about composting.

SAFE DISPOSAL Manhattan will take place in Manhattan on the south side of 17th St, between Park Ave South and Broadway in Union Square. Cars can approach from Park Ave South and 20th St. Similar events are currently planned for Brooklyn on Sunday, September 17 and the Bronx on Saturday, October 7.

Materials accepted include common household products such as auto fluids, batteries, electronics, strong cleaners, medications, paint, lightbulbs, and more.
