Thankfully, online shopping means that most of us can enjoy the best deals from the comfort of our own homes. However, that doesn’t stop millions of people around the world descending on shopping centres to get their hands on reduced gadgets.

It doesn’t take a genius to work out that Black Friday is among the most hectic days of the year for retail workers. But surprisingly, it’s also the busiest day of the calendar for plumbers. A combination of shopping stress and one too many coffees for customers seems to overwhelm the plumbing system – it gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘flush economy’!

Still confused about the plumber fact? Well, this one might help to explain it. According to a survey, 12% of Black Friday Shoppers are drunk. That’s one way to add some excitement to the dullness of shopping – but we’re still not sure there’s enough alcohol in the world to make us want to attack someone for the last discounted microwave!
ORIGIN STORY
There are plenty of theories about the origin story of ‘Black Friday’. Some believe the name was coined from the pollution caused by the increase in traffic from shoppers. Others say the name spawned from workers calling in sick the day after Thanksgiving in order to blag a four-day weekend.
But the term actually developed from the mad day of shopping putting retailers ‘into the black’, which makes sense considering 30% of all yearly retail purchases take place between Black Friday and Christmas. Shop-tastic!
HEY BIG SPENDER
We all love a bargain, don’t we? The stats certainly agree! Back in 2019, the United Kingdom were way out in front as the biggest Black Friday spenders in Europe, shelling out a whopping £8.57 billion.
We didn’t splash the cash as much as our cousins across the pond, but we weren’t too far behind. The USA were the biggest spenders, with the average person buying £371 worth of goodies, while the UK came in third, spending £304 each.
IT’S ALL FUN AND GAMES
Understandably, we were all a bit bored this time last year. So, it’s no surprise that the most-searched item leading up to Black Friday was the Nintendo Switch, with almost 3 million searches. No wonder they ran out of stock so quickly! Meanwhile, John Lewis reported that their most sought-after products were Apple Airpods and iPads, as well as LEGO.
THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH
As the weather gets colder and the nights get darker, what’s more comforting than a mug of hot chocolate, a big bowl of popcorn and a classic Disney film on the TV? It seems plenty of people agree because on Black Friday back in 2019, more than 10 million people signed up to streaming service Disney+.

You’ve seen the videos – we all know Black Friday can get a little bit out of hand. And one shopper took matters into her own hands back in 2011. According to ABC, a woman in America pepper sprayed 20 people as they attacked her children while trying to buy Xboxes. Save the violence for the video games, guys!
LONDON CALLING
Who said men hate shopping? Well, they definitely don’t on Black Friday! According to a survey, men are more likely to spend this year. And they’re also willing to splash out the most. The average man is planning on spending £335, compared to just £190 for women. Meanwhile, Londoners are looking to spend £468 each on average, which is by far and away the most in the UK. That’s London prices for you!
