Apple Developing EarPods With Custom Low-Power Bluetooth [Rumor]

So far Apple’s EarPods have all been wired, which is more or less standard when it comes to bundled headphones. However with Apple reportedly dropping the headphone jack from this year’s iPhone, there has been debate as to whether Apple will supply Lightning EarPods, Bluetooth EarPods, or regular EarPods with a Lightning adapter.

We suppose we’ll have to wait and see what happens later this year, but in the meantime, a report from Forbes has revealed that Apple could be developing Bluetooth EarPods. The report claims that Apple is working on these wireless headphones using a custom low-powered Bluetooth chip that will supposedly offer up better battery life than current wireless headphones.

These chips are said to be supplied by Passif Semiconductor, a company that Apple acquired back in 2013. However before you get too excited, it should be noted that these headphones were said to be launched in 2015, but performance issues led it to being delayed, so at this time it is unclear if they will still be using Passif’s tech or some third-party’s chips.

Assuming all goes to plan, we suppose it wouldn’t be surprising to see Apple launch them alongside the iPhone 7. However there is still the question of whether these headphones will come bundled with the iPhone or sold separately, until then take it with a grain of salt.
