AI Beats Real-Life Fighter Pilot In Dogfight Simulation

ai pilot alphaHave you ever wondered how equipped are we in the event that the robots rise up against us? Turns out that maybe we’re not as prepared as we should be. Recently over at the University of Cincinnati, a doctoral graduate has managed to create a Pilot AI that is smart enough where in a simulated dogfight against an actual fighter pilot, it actually managed to win every single time.

The pilot in question is no newbie either. He is retired US Air Force Colonel Gene “Geno” Lee, who is a former Air Force Battle Manager and adversary tactics instructor. He has managed to log thousands of hours as a pilot and mission commander, so it is safe to say that he knows what he is doing.

Lee praised ALPHA by saying, “I was surprised at how aware and reactive it was. It seemed to be aware of my intentions and reacting instantly to my changes in flight and my missile deployment. It knew how to defeat the shot I was taking. It moved instantly between defensive and offensive actions as needed.”

He also adds, “I go home feeling washed out. I’m tired, drained and mentally exhausted. This may be artificial intelligence, but it represents a real challenge.” This is thanks to how ALPHA works in which it relies on a decision-making system called a genetic fuzzy tree, which essentially approaches problems much like an actual person would, like breaking the larger task in front of it into small and more manageable tasks and considers only the most relevant variables, thus allowing it to make extremely quick decisions.
