February 6th is going to be a historic day for SpaceX. The company has confirmed that it’s going to conduct the first ever test flight of its Falcon Heavy rocket on February 6th.The Falcon Heavy is a new high capacity rocket which will enable SpaceX to transport triple the amount of payload per mission than it currently does with the Falcon 9 rocket.

The confirmation came yesterday from SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Twitter. He said that the company is aiming for the first flight of Falcon Heavy on February 6th from the launchpad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center. SpaceX has refurbished and modified the launch pad for the Falcon Heavy. This launchpad has previously been used for NASA’s Apollo and Space Shuttle missions.

The company had previously said that it was planning to conduct the launch about a week or so after the successful static test fire of the Falcon Heavy rocket. That took place successfully on January 24th and now Musk has confirmed when SpaceX will conduct the Falcon Heavy’s first flight.

SpaceX won’t be launching any client’s payload with this test flight. The payload is actually Musk’s original cherry red Tesla Roadster that will be put into a long looping Mars orbit, there’s no scientific reason behind this, it’s probably that Musk felt it would be cool to have his car orbiting Mars.
