Dell Is Selling Jewelry Made With Reclaimed Gold From Recycled Computers

The chips in the electronic devices that we use every day have precious metals even if in the minutest of quantities. Instead of having it all go to waste when said devices inevitably get outdated and replaced, Dell has come up with an interested recycling program. It’s Selling Jewelry that’s made with Gold from recycled computers. Dell has launched a limited edition jewelry collection that’s fashioned from gold it extracted from recycled motherboards.

The company has partnered with actress Nikki Reed for this jewelry line which offers up to 14 and 18 carat gold rings, cuff links, and earrings. It may just be a very interesting way to bring attention to its recycling efforts, but at least Dell has thought out of the box on this initiative.

Millions of dollars worth of gold and silver is thrown away annually because according to EPA estimates, only 12.5 percent of the e-waste is actually recycled. This results in a loss of around $60 million in gold and silver that’s not recycled properly from old chips.

Dell says that it has improved its recycling processes which have left it with an excess amount of gold. It’s not stockpiling the gold. The company decided to use it for making and selling jewelry that’s now available for pre-order. Prices start at $78 for a ring and go as high as $348 for a pair of cufflinks.
