Samsung’s ‘Nautilus’ Chromebook Will Tout A Sony IMX Camera

If recent reports are to be believed, Samsung is working on a new Chromebook that’s codenamed “Nautilus.” It’s said to be a 2-in-1 Chromebook that’s also going to feature a stylus. Details about the specifications of this machine are slim but more reports are now surfacing with additional information. The latest reveals that the Chromebook is going to feature a Sony Imx Camera, unlike any other Chromebook ever.

The folks at ChromeUnboxed have spotted code references in the Chromium Repositories which reveals that the Chromebook is going to come with a Sony IMX258 camera.

This is the same sensor that’s found in the LG G6. It’s a 13 megapixel CMOS sensor with Exmor RS technology. No other Chromebook has had a camera as high-end as the IMX258. The camera situation on Chromebooks has been very disappointing actually. The best one ever on a Chromebook is a 720p camera.

Even if the camera hardware is bumped up, it doesn’t change the fact that the Chrome OS camera app leaves a lot to be desired. Improved hardware can only do so much in the absence of software optimizations.

Samsung may unveil the new Chromebook at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 next week even if it doesn’t release the device immediately. No word as yet on pricing and availability.
