Sportswear Company ASICS Acquires Runkeeper

runkeeperIn more recent times, we have seen sporting goods companies take an interest in the Mobile Scene. Just last year Under Armour acquired a bunch of fitness-related apps, and this year it looks like Asics wants in on the fun as well, and has recently announced that they have acquired fitness app Runkeeper.

To be more specific, ASICS has acquired FitnessKeeper who is the developer behind the Runkeeper app. According to the company’s announcement, “ASICS reached a decision on this Acquisition as we believe that the integration of ‘Runkeeper’s’ globally recognized brand and worldwide user base with ASICS’ technological competence in manufacturing will lead to continued enhancement of our corporate value.”

For now it sounds like ASICS won’t be doing anything to the app and will continue to keep it alive, so for those worried that you might lose your app, fret not as it appears to be here to stay. In fact if anything, it sounds like ASICS has plans on adding new features, services, and content to FitnessKeeper’s apps, so users will want to keep an eye out for it.

This isn’t ASICS’ first foray into the mobile scene. Prior to this, the company launched their own app called My ASICS, which obviously did not do as well compared to other fitness apps like the Nike+. It is also unclear if ASICS will eventually do away with the $9.99 subscription that FitnessKeeper charges for access to exclusive features, but it is a source of revenue so we don’t see why not.
