Earlier this year when the Nintendo Switch was unveiled in-depth, it was discovered that the console would not support Bluetooth headsets. Instead users who want to Voice Chat will have to rely on an upcoming Nintendo Switch app for mobile devices to help facilitate that kind of communications.

Now if you’re looking forward to Splatoon 2, the folks at Hori have recently unveiled an officially-licensed headset accessory for the game and from what we can tell from the setup, it looks pretty complicated and involves a lot of wires. Basically the headset will be plugged into an arrow-shaped like device, and from there it will be further split off into two more wires, one that goes into the Switch to pipe audio from the console to the headset, and another that plugs into your phone for Voice chat.

While wired connections are fine, this presents yet another problem which is that the cables aren’t particularly long at 20 inches. This means that if your TV and Switch is far away from your couch, you can pretty much kiss voice chatting goodbye, or move your chair closer to the TV which isn’t always ideal or possible.

Earlier this year Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime defended the company’s decision to use a smartphone app to handle voice chat. Speaking to IGN, Fils-Aime basically stated that they wanted to reinforce the Switch’s portability, and that being able to use your phone to voice chat instead of lugging around a gamer headset is more convenient. Whether or not this ultimately proves to be true remains to be seen, but so far gamers don’t seem particularly thrilled about it.
