Nest Cam IQ With 4K Sensor Now Official

It was reported last week that Nest was gearing up to launch a new indoor camera which would have a 4K sensor. The company has now officially unveiled this product. It’s called the Nest Cam IQ. It has a 4K sensor and a couple of new features that set it apart from Nest’s existing indoor security camera. The new features do come at a price, though, which is why it’s more expensive.

The Nest Cam IQ features an 8 megapixel 4K camera but that doesn’t mean it actually streams video in 4K. It actually uses the sensor to provide enhanced zooming functionality that it calls Supersight.

Those additional pixels are used to power the clear 1080p zooming feature. Supersight is capable of automatically detecting movement and zooming in, it can follow objects as they shift around.

Users can view the live video feed with a full HD picture-in-picture zoom window. The Nest Cam IQ has support for 12x digital zoom as well as High Dynamic Range. A 130 degree field of view means that it provides a wider image of the room.

Advanced objection recognition capability is onboard as well. The camera is capable of telling the difference between a human and an object. It can thus generate a special live feed when it detects people and zooms in on their faces.

This functionality is free but the “familiar face” feature costs extra. This feature pushes alerts to the user with zoomed videos if a stranger walks in front of the camera. This requires a Nest Aware subscription which starts at $10 per month.

The Nest Cam IQ can be pre-ordered starting today in the United States. It will be released by the end of next month. Nest is selling its new camera for $299.
