Nintendo Thinks The Switch Can Match The Wii’s Sales

The Nintendo Wii is one of Nintendo’s best-selling consoles in recent times, which is why when the Wii U was launched, many had expected it to build on the success of its predecessor. However we all know how that story ends, but it seems that Nintendo thinks that they can redeem themselves with the Switch.

According to a Q&A during Nintendo’s recent financial results briefing (via MCV UK), Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima expressed his belief that the Switch has the potential to match the sales of the Wii. “And if our sales go according to our plan this fiscal year, we will be able to see Nintendo Switch gaining the momentum in which it can approach relative parity with Wii afterwards.”

He adds, “The truth is we want to raise the installed base of Nintendo Switch up to the same level as Wii.” So far the Switch has been doing pretty well for itself and has managed to rack up close to 3 million units sold since it was released. Recently it was suggested that it could even outsell the Wii U within its first year which wouldn’t be too difficult considering that the Wii U’s lifetime sales was around 13 million.

For those wondering, the Wii’s lifetime sales is at 101.63 million so clearly it looks like Nintendo has a long way to go. However with many major games having yet to be released and upcoming holiday shopping seasons, there are still plenty of chances for the Switch to play catch up.
