Swatch Developing Its Own Smartwatch OS

Swatch is one of the biggest watchmakers in Switzerland and it has never been shy of getting with the times. With the popularity of smartwatches steadily increasing and companies like Tag Heuer coming out with their second-generation Android Wear smartwatches, how can Swatch stay behind? The Swatch Group has said that it’s developing its own smartwatch operating system which will be an alternative to the existing operating systems that power most of the smartwatches available in the market today.

Swatch CEO Nick Hayek has confirmed today that the company’s Tissot brand is going to introduce its first smartwatch model by the end of next year. It’s going to have an OS that’s made in Switzerland by the group itself.

Not much has been revealed about the new operating system at this point in time but Hayek has added that it’s going to require less battery power and will offer better data security.

Swatch has also said that it’s open to the idea of sharing the operating system with other manufacturers, adding that it has received nearly 100 requests for more information about the operating system with more than half coming from companies based in Silicon Valley that don’t want their products to rely on Android.

More information about the first Tissot-branded smartwatch is likely to be revealed either later this year or early next year.
