Nokia’s Android Handsets To Receive Monthly Security Updates

Just as Samsung announced that unlocked Galaxy handsets in the US would be getting Monthly Security Updates, it seems that Nokia will be doing the same for their Android lineup as well, which will include the recently launched Nokia 6, Nokia 5, and Nokia 3 devices, and presumably future Android phones as well.

In a tweet by the Nokia Mobile account, the company revealed that all their Android phones would be on the receiving end of monthly updates. The tweet also mentioned Android updates, although it will be interesting to see how far support will go. Typically what we’ve seen in the past is that Android OEMs tend to support 1-2 major Android builds, so it is unclear if Nokia will go further or if it will end up being the same as everyone else.

Also these updates don’t really come as a surprise. Following the Stagefright Android vulnerability discovered a couple of years ago, Android OEMs were quick to hop on the security bandwagon by promising monthly security updates. This would ensure that phones would always remain up to date with the latest patches that will hopefully prevent hackers from taking advantage of exploits.

In any case this is good news for those who are planning on getting a Nokia handset, so if constant updates are a priority to you, know that your Nokia phone will be relatively secure.
